Reiki and You
The high-frequency healing energy stimulates and accelerates the body’s own natural healing ability to aid pain relief and physical healing. Healing often needs to happen first at an emotional or mental level to release negative thoughts and attitudes.
If healing is to be permanent, the recipient has the ultimate responsibility for healing the cause. This may mean changing how you think or the way in which you relate to other people. Or it could be that you need to look at your whole lifestyle, from your diet to close relationships or career (“Reiki principles” are shown in the "Just for Today" messages illustration next to this paragraph).
Healing therefore is not just something which someone else does to you. There is truly only one healer of your body and that is you because all healing is self-healing. Your body possesses an ability to heal itself so all anyone else can do, whether that person is somebody like a doctor, nurse, a therapist or a healer, is to start the natural process in whatever way. You and your body then have to continue the healing process.
Reiki and Religion
Reiki is totally non-denominational and not a religious practice. You do not need to be religious to benefit from it but if you are, people who believe in any religion can still receive Reiki just as effectively. Reiki is considered to be positive and no harm can come from its use. The recipient draws the right amount of energy to the place where it is needed. As described, imbalances in any of the energy bodies are often caused by anxiety and stress which can then translate into illness in the physical body.
The healing can work for everyone, even somebody who does not believe in it. The only person for whom Reiki will not work is the person who feels they do not really want it. If that is you, come back if you change your mind.
Towards the end of his life, Usui passed on his knowledge and learning to a Dr Hayashi, a former naval commander, who was said to have then opened his own Reiki clinic. Sometime in 1935, a young woman from Hawaii called Hawayo Takata came to the Hayashi clinic to be healed for a serious illness.
She was so impressed with the results that she asked to be allowed to learn Reiki. She lived with Hayashi's family and worked without pay in his clinic in exchange for the privilege of learning the first and second levels of the healing system. It was she who opened the first Reiki clinic in the West (in Hawaii) where Dr Hayashi and his family came to visit her in 1938. During this visit, he passed on the final level of Reiki teachings so that Hawayo could herself teach the healing art to others.
Later there were fears that neither Dr Hayashi nor any of his students had survived World War II and Mrs Takata thought she was in the position of being the only Reiki teacher left to carry on the work. She travelled widely healing people and training others in Reiki. Initially she held classes in the first two levels of Reiki training. In the 1970's she started to teach the 3rd level of Reiki so that others would be able to pass on the healing system after she had gone.
It was developed by a Japanese Buddhist priest, Dr Mikao Usui, who discovered a way of accessing and using spiritual energy. In the last few years of his life Dr Usui taught the system to students to enable them to become practioners. Reiki then continued to be handed down from teacher to student orally and in the traditional Japenese way.
By the time she died in 1980, she had trained 22 "masters", and it is through them that Reiki began to spread throughout the Western world. Every accredited Reiki practitioner has a “lineage” which, stage by stage links him or her back to Dr Usui. Reiki associations thoroughly check the validity of their training and "lineage" before accepting anyone as a member.
Hawayo Takata used the system of spiritual empowerments called “attunements” which Reiki students are given at each level of their training. The training and the attunements open up the healing ability in the student. As mentioned above, and as tended to be the Japanese way, teaching was passed on only orally, but in the early 1990s the system of teaching Reiki began to change. Written manuals and books about Reiki began to appear and it rapidly spread all over the world. It was typical of Japanese culture that knowledge, symbols and other valuable information would be treated as sacred, secret and not to be subjects for general publication. This is one of the reasons why it took so long for information to reach the West about Reiki’s more recent development in Japan itself. Despite Mrs Takata's fears, some twenty of Dr Usui’s old students did survive to carry on the healing in Japan.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a safe and non-intrusive hands-on healing technique which uses subtle gentle energy to treat emotional and physical conditions without using pressure, manipulation or massage. It is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonising all aspects of the person.
Energy and Healing
The word Reiki broken down is divided into two parts. “Rei” can be translated as “the wisdom and knowledge of all the universe” (the wisdom that comes from God, the universe, or “all that is”). “Ki” is the life force energy (spirit) which flows through all living things and which presents in some form in everything around us, even inanimate objects. The Japanese characters for “Reiki” are the symbols displayed on the Home page of this site and on the UK Reiki Federation logo.
All of physical creation, our bodies included, is constructed of atoms which are minute packets of vibrating energy or quanta in various combinations. Every substance in our reality, from the air we breathe and our bodies to everything on our planet and beyond is made of these different elemental atoms in combination. Albert Einstein, and later quantum physicists, have confirmed the whole universe is a connected web made up of these energies.
It is possible for anyone to become sensitive enough to “read” or “sense” their own or others’ energy centres so that healing can be directed to areas that need it. Reiki practitioners have been trained and attuned to be open to these energies and, as a result are able to act as a channel to improve flow. The state of the energy body is vitally important to the health of all individuals. Healing is a method of correcting body imbalances and restoring health by connecting with life force energy/spirit to work in harmony the physical body. Reiki is one of several methods of healing by re-channelling energy to “re-tune” the body.
I hope to be able to give more detail on the makeup of energy, cells and also the effects of negativity in pages currently being prepared on 'anxiety and stress' and 'perspectives' as the site progresses.
